First Baptist Church of West Hartford hopes the merger with Asylum Avenue Baptist Church might still happen

The annual meeting of the First Baptist Church of West Hartford took place this evening.

  1. The report of the special committee that negotiated with the members of the Asylum Avenue Baptist Church were read.
  2. H. P. Hammond moved that the minutes be accepted, and the motion passed.
  3. Hammond submitted a resolution for adoption. The resolution read:
  • The members of First Baptist Church continued to “desire that both churches unite at such time and manner as may serve the interest of both groups.”
  • The members also expressed their “desire and purpose for the most hearty cooperation between the two churches.”
  1. The resolution passed.

In addition to the matters related to the merger, the members also elected their officers for the next year.

The article referred to the special committee of the First Baptist Church and the subcommittee of the Asylum Avenue Baptist Church building committee as a “joint committee.”  So far, this is the only reference to the two committees forming a joint committee.

Merger talks between First Baptist Church of West Hartford and Asylum Avenue Baptist Church were held on April 1, 1931.

On April 6, 1931, the building committee of Asylum Avenue Baptist Church approved moving forward with building a new church at their present site.

The members of Asylum Avenue Baptist Church approved plans for their new church at a special meeting on April 13, 1931.
