The subcommittee of the Asylum Avenue Baptist Church met with the special committee of the First Baptist Church of West Hartford, and both committees concluded that they would not move forward with a proposed merger.

  1. The meeting was attended by the full membership of both committees.
  2. The meeting lasted three hours.
  3. Questions considered by the two committees included:
  • Possible site for the new church
  • Selection of the minister for the merged churches
  • Fundraising for the new building
  1. The attendees concluded that negotiations on a merger would take too long, and based on Asylum Avenue Baptist Church’s “urgent need” for a new building, it was decided that a merger wouldn’t be “practical at this time.”
  2. The two committees voted to “report back to their respective church bodies that a merger at this time seems out of the question”.
  3. W. James Tuller announced the committees’ vote after the meeting.

“It was discovered that there were many things to be ironed out before the merger could be consummated, and it was felt that need for immediate action was pressing.”

The building committee of Asylum Avenue Baptist Church would formally approve plans to rebuild the church at its present location on April 6, 1931.

On March 29, 1931, Asylum Avenue Baptist Church formally designated a subcommittee to negotiate a merger with First Baptist Church of West Hartford.

W. James Tuller served as clerk for the two committees at this meeting.
