This evening, the Board of Aldermen and the Board of Councilmen met separately to consider various items. During their meeting, the Aldermen received the final report of the Old Town Farm Committee.

The final report of the old town farm committee provided an accounting of funds received and disbursed:

Trust but verify

It’s not entirely clear how this “final” report differs from the last “final” report, given just over two years ago, except that the numbers have all grown – note in particular the sales proceeds here are $16,000 more than they were in 1895, and that the interest earned is $2,196.53, which is $600 higher. It seems likely that the 1895 final report was the final report given to the Town of Hartford, while this report was the final report to the City of Hartford and can, therefore, be consider the truly final report of the committee. Until I find the next “final” report, that is.
The article recorded the line item expenditure as “McClunie,” and while that probably means J. Alex McClunie it could also mean his company or any of his brothers, with whom he partnered in his company. This also seems to be a payment for maintenance, not for landscaping, which further confuses the identify of “McClunie.”

The past recalled

On October 28, 1895, the old town farm committee presented its final report at the adjourned annual town meeting.

The future foretold

On November 24, 1897, the Courant will editorialize on the successful conclusion of the old town farm committee’s work.
