The general committee of the Asylum Avenue Baptist Church announced that it had decided to rebuild the church at its present location.  The announcement followed Sunday service and two meetings.

  1. Sunday service was held at the West Middle District School auditorium.
  2. The members of the Asylum Avenue Baptist Church then held an informal meeting.
  • Frank Haggard led this meeting
  • Haggard reported the following: the insurance adjustment did not cover the value of the church building and would not be enough moving to a new location; moving to a new location would, therefore, entail a considerable financial loss for the church; an assessment of the building had determined that much of the building could be salvaged; and contractors had assured the general committee that the cost to re-build the church at its current location would be less than the insurance settlement.
  • During the ensuing discussion, the members of the church did not express any opposition to the plan to re-build.
  • The members voted informally to accept the plan to rebuild.
  1. A special meeting of the general committee was then called immediately.
  • The committee decided to drop all other plans for the church due to their expense.
  • The committee appointed a building to committee to confer with Ebbets and Frid
  • The committee gave the building committee authority to proceed with arrangements to re-build the church and required that the building committee report back “from time to time.”

  1. The anticipated cost of the project was approximately $50,000.
  2. The church planned to make changes to both the interior and exterior of the auditorium.
  3. The plans would make use of the present building “to a considerable extent”.
  4. The church anticipated that the remodeled building would appear considerably different than the original church building.

  1. The general committee of the church anticipated an appraisal of the condition of the church building would be made at some point after their meeting on February 2, 1931.
  2. On February 11, 1931, the church accepted a settlement offer of $55,000 from the insurance companies that held the policy on the church.

The church’s building committee would meet at the offices of Ebbets & Frid on March 9, 1931.

  1. Ebbets & Frid were local Hartford architects with an office at 15 Lewis Street. The partners were
  • Warner A. Ebbets, who was also a member of the Asylum Avenue Baptist Church
  • Victor A. Frid
  1. The individuals appointed to the building committee were
  • A. Raleigh Carpenter, vice chair;
  • George Chandler, chair;
  • Harvey W. Corbin;
  • Earl E. Dimon;
  • A. O. Knudsen;
  • Lewis M. Robotham;
  • Alfred Spencer Jr.;
  • Henry W. Warren, secretary; and
  • J. Allen Wiley.
