Asylum Avenue Baptist Church accepts insurance settlement for damages caused by fire

The general committee of Asylum Avenue Baptist Church met this evening and accepted a settlement offer from the insurance companies in payment for damage caused by the fire to the church.

  1. The settlement offered by the New Hampshire Fire Insurance Company and the City of New York Insurance Company was $55,000.
  • $4,000 of the settlement was for furniture.
  • $7,000 was for the organ.
  1. The church’s executive committee recommended that the general committee approve acceptance of the offered settlement.
  2. The general committee received estimates on the cost to restore the church building.
  • The cost estimates indicated that the settlement offered by the insurance companies would cover the cost to repair the existing structure but not to restore it completely.
  1. The general committee also voted to authorize the church’s treasurer to receive the settlement funds and to issue a receipt for them.
  2. The general committee discussed at length whether or not to rebuild the church at its current location, but ultimately the general committee “postponed action on this matter pending further investigation.”

  1. R. G. Bent had acted on behalf of the church during discussions with the insurance companies.
  2. Frederick J. Bliss had acted on behalf of the insurance companies.

The fire that destroyed the church took place on February 1, 1931.

The Asylum Avenue Baptist Church general committee would announce that it had voted to rebuild the church at its present location on February 15, 1931.

  1. Rupert G. Bent was president of the R. G. Bent Company, a construction company based in Hartford. G. Bent Company built the chapel at Trinity College.
  2. Fred Bliss was a Hartford building inspector and a member of Bliss and Cole, an insurance adjusting and appraising firm.
