Carl McKinley gave an organ recital at Asylum Avenue Baptist Church.

  1. The church was filled to capacity for the recital.
  2. McKinley’s program included
  • Now Thank We all Our God [Sigfird Karg-Elert]
  • How Brightly Shines the Morning Star [Sigfird Karg-Elert]
  • From the Depths of My Heart [Sigfird Karg-Elert]
  • Chorale in E major [Cesar Franck]
  • Jesu My Chief Pleasure [J. S. Bach]
  • I Cry Unto Thee [J. S. Bach]
  • Tidings of Joy [J. S. Bach]
  • Westminster Chimes [Louis Vierne]
  • Valse Triste [Jan Sibelius
  • Chime Melody and four variations on Dundeo [Carl McKinley]

  1. A reception for McKinley followed the recital and was held in the parish house.
  2. Also in the reception line were Frank B. Haggard, his wife, the deacons, and the deacons’ wives.
  3. The church’s Woman’s Society served refreshments at this event.

  1. The description of the program came from an article published on November 16, 1931. The article about the event did not list any of the individual pieces performed by McKinley, reporting only that he “played church music and other classics on the organ.”
  2. This article is the first mention of the “new parish house” that I’ve found. The article described it as “abutting the church.”

There had been a youth banquet at the church last night as part of the dedicatory services.

This event was part of the dedicatory services the church held for its newly remodeling building.

  1. Carl McKinley was the organist at Old South Church in Boston and former organist at Center Congregational Church in Hartford.
  2. Frank B. Haggard was the pastor at Asylum Avenue Baptist Church.
