Funeral of Willis Howard Butler

The funeral of Willis Howard Butler was held at the Asylum Hill Congregational Church this afternoon.

  1. The church was filled to capacity.
  2. The service was conducted by Warren S. Archibald.
  3. The service consisted of selections from Scriptures and prayers.
  4. Hymns included “A Mighty Fortress is Our God,” “Rise My Soul and Stretch Thy Wings,” and “Christian, Dost Thou See Them on the Holy Ground?”
    • Edward Laubin was the accompanist.
  5. The bearers were Lyman K. Babcock; Guy E. Beardsley; James W. Carpenter; Charles G. Case; Harry W. Conklin; William H. Corbin; Charles W. Gross; Franklin B. Pease; and Charles C. Russ.
  6. The prudential committee was in charge of the arrangements for the service and acted as ushers.

  1. Butler’s private burial would take place at the family’s convenience in the Old Town Cemetery, Old Town, ME.
  2. A memorial doorway would be installed in Butler’s honor on October 18, 1931.

Present at the funeral were people from Butler’s past, including three of his previous churches, classmates from Princeton, and a delegation from Clarke School for the Deaf, where Butler served as a board member.

  1. Warren Archibald was pastor of the South Congregational Church and a close friend of Butler.
  2. Edward Laubin was the organist and choir director at Asylum Hill Congregational Church.
  3. The prudential committee included all of the bearers and Arthur W. Gregory, Winthrop A. Haviland, W. Ross McCain, and James L. Thomson.
