The Asylum Avenue Baptist Church approved expanding their building

The Asylum Avenue Baptist Church held a special meeting in the chapel this evening.

  1. The congregation voted unanimously to make changes to the church building as recommended by the church’s governing committee.
  2. The vote also authorized the church’s building committee to proceed with the plan to alter the church building.

  1. The general committee hoped to complete the project for $30,000, but it asked the congregation to contribute $35,000 in order to cover any unforeseen contingencies.
  2. To date, 15 families had pledged $21,350.

According to Lewis Robotham, “the present plan of increasing the church accommodations had been approved by 130 of 160 members, who responded to the request of the general committee after a copy of the proposed building plan had been sent to each member.”  This information appears to dispute the Courant’s report that the vote at tonight’s special meeting was unanimous, although the 30 dissenters may not have attended the meeting.  Or there were no dissenters, and 30 people had yet to respond.

Last fall, the church members decided against building a new church west of the church’s current location.

The building committee will hold a meeting in the chapel on May 27, 1924, to move forward with the plans and with soliciting bids for the work.

“Lewis M. Robotham explained the necessity for additional room in the church and told what had been done since a meeting last fall when the idea of building a new church further west was abandoned.”
