The Hartford Courant publishes the capstone on the construction of the Hartford Fire Insurance Company building

Today, the Courant published five articles that served as a summary of the whole project to construct the new Hartford Fire Insurance Company building on Asylum Avenue.

  1. The building wasn’t quite finished – the offices were still being outfitted with Dictaphone equipment, and the chilled drinking water system hadn’t been fully installed in the building.
  2. There were 10 principal contractors and 65 subcontractors that worked on the project. The most recognizable name among them today:  the Stanley Works of New Britain.

These articles included a list of all of the firms that worked on the project, some interesting facts about the building, a general description of the building and its grounds, and a history of the company.  Articles such as these typically accompanied reports on the completion of a major building project, which just as typically culminated with a major event such as a ribbon-cutting, a dedication ceremony, or even an open house.  Despite several searches, I haven’t found any such event between November 7 and this date or, for that matter, after this date.  Thus, these articles may have served as the Courant’s declaration that the project was now done.

Hartford Fire officially occupied the new building on November 7, 1921.

The Courant did seem to anticipate an open house, back on November 3, 1921.

The total value of the property at the conclusion of the project was $3,000,000.  Today, that would translate into $49,945,810.06.

“The natural lighting obtained through the building design and location is excellent and most satisfactory results have been obtained for auxiliary service by artificial lighting.  The fixtures provide indirect diffusion and the lighting engineers have been so successful that the volume of light Is equal in parts of the spacious working quarters.  No annoying glares by strong lights are encountered and a bright cheerful atmosphere is further obtained through the bright tint of the walls.
