Harriet Beecher Stowe had a stroke and was left partially paralyzed.
The official diagnosis was “congestion of the brain and paralysis.”
The New York Times reported that Harriet Beecher Stowe will be out of bed at least part of the time between now and June 29, 1896. The Hartford Courant, on the other hand, did not address any confinement directly, but the inference from their reporting was that she was primarily if not entirely in bed from this point until her death on July 1, 1896.
Yesterday, Harriet Beecher Stowe impressed her friends by recalling the first stanza of a poem that she had written 10 years ago.
The New York Times described her “malady” as having persisted for many years, calling it a “mental trouble” that took on an “acute form” today.
On June 29, 1896, Stowe will be confined to her bed.
