Harriet Beecher Stowe overheard one of her friends trying to remember some of Stowe’s verses that had been written 10 years earlier: “To the astonishment of all who were present, Mrs. Stowe took up the words and repeated the whole first stanza.”
This anecdote was re-told in the Courant’s obituary of Harriet Beecher Stowe, and it was offered as evidence that, despite her cognitive decline over the past several years, she had moments of lucidity. The anecdote, however, remains unverified.
Tomorrow, Harriet Beecher Stowe will have a stroke.
