The body of Thomas Galberry arrived in Hartford on the fast train from New York this afternoon.

  1. About 2,000 people were waiting at the train station for the body to arrive.
  2. Scott & Smith took charge of the body.
  3. The body was then taken to the bishop’s residence on Farmington Avenue.
  4. A long procession of priests and citizens followed the body.

Thomas Walsh, who had been seriously ill for several days, suffered a relapse tonight upon hearing the news of Thomas Galberry’s death.  The “prospects of recovery are represented as still doubtful.”

Galberry died in New York City yesterday.

Requiem masses for Thomas Galberry began this morning.

  1. It was expected that the body would lie in state at the Mount Saint Joseph Convent until October 14, 1878, at which point it would be moved to the Cathedral of Saint Joseph.
  2. The funeral was scheduled for October 15, 1878.

“The announcement of the sudden death of Bishop Galberry of the Roman Catholic diocese of Hartford by The Courant yesterday morning was a great surprise to most people, as new of his demise the evening before had not been generally circulated.”

The Courant based some of its information on Galberry’s death on an article published in the New York Times, but the Courant excluded a few items from the Times.
