According to an article in the Courant, a group of men bought a lot on the corner of Asylum Avenue and Sigourney Street from George Affleck, in order to build a new Baptist church there.

  1. The men were residents of Asylum Hill and members of the First and Second Baptist Churches.
  2. The lot measured 100 feet on Asylum Avenue and 200 feet along Sigourney Street, which are the present day dimensions of the property.

  1. The article reported that the group of men planned to build first a chapel and then, eventually, a church.
  2. Terms of the transaction were kept private, but in October 1872 the Courant reported that the purchase price for the lot had been $11,000.

I haven’t determined the exact date of the transaction yet.

According to the Courant, the Asylum Hill Baptist Society was considering whether to build a church on its property on the corner of Asylum and Sigourney on January 9, 1871.

  1. George Affleck ran the Asylum Hill Nursery, and he owned the land between Huntington Street and Sigourney Street.
  2. $11,000 in 1871 is equivalent to $252,613.74 in 2023.
