According to yesterday’s Courant, Calvin Stowe was scheduled to preach today at the chapel. The service was scheduled to begin at 10:45, and it would be followed by the “usual Bible lecture at [3:20].”

The Courant often used fractional time – ½, ¼ -- but for the Bible study it sure looks like it was 1/3.

Joseph Twichell will be installed as pastor on December 13, 1865.

This article included a survey of the salaries paid to the ministers at the 272 Congregational churches in Connecticut.  They gave salary ranges, and they went from $500 or less at the low end of the scale to $3000 at the high end.

  • $500 or less: 37 ministers
  • $500-$600: 48
  • $600-$700: 39
  • $700-$800: 34
  • $800-$900: 19
  • $900-$1,000: 35
  • $1,000-$1,200: 21
  • $1,200-$1,800: 21
  • $1,800-$2,000: 6
  • $2,000-$2,500: 4
  • $3,000: 2

Salaries were highest in New Haven, Hartford, and Fairfield Counties and lowest in Middletown, Tolland and Windham Counties.  Since 1860, 144 ministers had received raises, while 32 had their salaries cut.  For perspective:  $1,000 in 1865 is $16,500 in today’s dollars.
