The Clock

The Clock
Purchased by Julia Turner in honor of Roland Mather, 1897; manufactured and installed by Seth Thomas Clock Company, 1897.

Clock components: diameter of dials 8 feet; a No. 16 B Hour Strike; a Denison’s gravity escapement; the clock wheels made of bronze, except in main strike wheel; cut gearing and steel pinions; a zinc and steel compensated pendulum between 8 and 9 feet long; a pendulum bob that weighed 175 pounds; gilt hands; and an inscription plate on the movement.

Additional details: the clock will strike the hours on the bell already in the tower; the clock has a device that will allow the striking mechanism to be turned on or off; the striking hammer was modulated so as not to be too loud; and the clock was unlikely to strike the hours between 8:00 pm and 8:00 am.

Inscription plate on the movement: Presented to the Asylum Hill Congregational Church, September 1897, in Memory of Roland Mather, by his daughter.

Estimated cost: $900, although the first digit is not entirely legible in the article.
