Veeder-Root staying in Hartford

Howard A. Newman told a reporter from the Courant that there were “no plans underway to move Veeder-Root.”

Newman added that moving Veeder-Root would be “a very difficult thing to do.

Newman was in New York City when reached by the reporter.

  1. There appears to have been a meeting of the board of directors yesterday, during which new officers of the company were elected, but the Courant article did not make that clear.
  2. The reporter was unnamed.
  3. The article gave the address of Veeder-Root as 58 Sargeant Street. The building’s address is currently 20-28 Sargeant Street, but a 1950 map of Hartford indicates that the building’s address at that time was 28-70.

  1. In 1971, Veeder Industries announced its intention to relocate Veeder-Root to Altoona, PA and to Elizabethtown, SC.
  2. Yesterday, Howard A. Newman was elected board chair and chief executive officer of Veeder Industries. Also elected was William C. Scott as president and chief operating officer.
  3. The current president and chief executive officer of Veeder Industries, Andrew J. Rebmann, tendered his resignation yesterday, effective as of September 30, 1975.

  1. Howard Newman and William C. Scott also had leadership roles in Western Pacific Industries, a railroad holding company that had acquired 50.2% of Veeder’s common stock.
  2. Veeder Industries was headquartered at 799 Main Street.
