According the Courant, a special committee of the Hartford Fire Board was scheduled to meet with officials of the Hartford Fire Insurance Company at 10:00 this morning in order to discuss the future of the Garden Street Reservoir.

  1. The special committee wanted to retain the reservoir as an auxiliary water supply for fire protection.
  2. The special committee concluded that Hartford Fire shared their position that the city be adequately protected against fire.

  1. The special committee already had held several meetings already regarding the auxiliary use of the reservoir.
  2. It was also “understood” that John C. Moran was in favor of keeping the reservoir.

  1. So far, I haven’t found any article that details this 10 AM meeting, nor is there any indication as to who the source for this article was.
  2. The article does not indicate who would represent Hartford Fire at this meeting.
  3. It is unclear with whom the special committee had met several times, but the implication is that these meetings were also with Hartford Fire. I haven’t been able to find any coverage of any additional meetings.

  1. The special committee had been formed at a meeting of the fire board on September 29, 1919.
  2. The Hartford Fire Insurance Company formally agreed to purchase the Garden Street Reservoir property on September 30, 1919.

Whitney Palache considered the agreement with the city to purchase the reservoir property to be finalized on October 5, 1919.

“The committee, which consists of President John J. McIntyre, Thomas F. Garvan and Jacob Schwolsky, has had several conferences as to the advisability of retaining the reservoir and come to the conclusion that the Hartford Fire Insurance Company was as much interested as the board could be in having the city adequately protected, and it would help the city in the matter of water protection rather than otherwise if it were found necessary.”

  1. The special committee consisted of John J. McIntyre, Thomas F. Garvan, and Jacob Schwolsky.
  2. John McIntyre was also president of the Hartford Board of Fire Commissioners.
  3. John C. Moran was Hartford Fire Chief.
