The Courant opines on development in Hartford

The Courant published an editorial today that hailed Hartford Fire’s move onto Asylum Hill as the most significant development in Hartford’s rapid expansion.

The editorial called Hartford Fire’s move to Asylum Hill “the most significant move of the many being made in the rapid expansion of Hartford.”  The other “moves” were:

  • Hartford Public High School and its additions
  • Rossia Insurance Company’s new office
  • “modern” apartment buildings

The editorial also described Asylum Hill as being “so conspicuous in the city’s topography.”

The editorial referred to “the extensive property of the American School for the Deaf ‘at the top of Asylum Hill’”.  The quotation marks suggest that the Courant was quoting a press release, but it is just as likely that it could have been a common reference to the property, even one made by the American School for the Deaf.

The Courant described the school’s decision to relocate to West Hartford as an “important move” on July 5, 1917.

The board of directors of the Hartford Fire Insurance Company approved the purchase of the ASD property this morning.

  1. “To be sure, the Rossia Insurance Company built a handsome home west of the railroad tracks a few years ago, and is thus the pioneer in pushing the business center to the west in what was the beginning of the modern residential section, but other insurance companies failed to follow that lead, developing instead, the Bushnell Park section.”
  2. “Now comes the great Hartford Fire, whose growth has been so marked under the able management of Richard M. Bissell that it has outgrown its own building and extensions, deciding to ‘go west’ and build on Asylum avenue on the large and desirable tract occupied for many years by the American School for the Deaf, which has wisely decided to postpone no longer its removal from the crowded city.”
  3. “The improvement of this property will mean a great deal for all surrounding property and stimulate further development in this choice section.”
