Edward Miner Gallaudet died at his home at 128 Woodland Street a little before 8:00 PM.

  1. Gallaudet had been in declining health for at least two years and “had been very feeble for a number of months.”
  2. Plans for his funeral awaited the arrival of his three sons at 128 Woodland Street.

Gallaudet’s health had prevented him from participating in the centennial celebration at the American School for the Deaf in July.

Apparently, there had recently been an effort to change the name of Asylum Avenue into Gallaudet Avenue in honor of Edward’s father, Thomas.

  1. “He inherited from his father a keen intellect, a rare gift of persuasion, and a philanthropic spirt, from his mother a vigorous constitution, personal comeliness, practical sagacity, and radiant vitality.”
  2. “People sometimes wondered that he was so successful in obtaining appropriations from Congress. The secret lay in his strong personality.  President Garfield, for several years a member of the committee on appropriations, once said:  ‘Nobody comes before the committee who makes so favorable an impression upon it as Dr. Gallaudet.’”

Unattributed.  “Death comes to Dr. E. M. Gallaudet, teacher of deaf,” Hartford Courant, September 27, 1917, page 1.
