Asylum Hill Congregational Church Men’s Club Holds Reception for Howard Arnold Walter

The AHCC Men’s Club held its annual meeting to elect officers and hear speeches.  The meeting also included a reception for Howard Walter.  About 75 people were in attendance.

  1. W. P. Conklin presided.
  2. Supper was served by the social committee.
  3. The Tuxedo Orchestra played several selections.
  4. There was chorus singing led by Merwin Gray.
  5. Election for officers:
    • President: Herbert S. Bullard
    • First Vice President: Frederick C. Gustetter
    • Second Vice President: Stanley L. Galpin
    • Secretary: John W. Joy
    • Treasurer: Myron H. Bridgman
    • Auditor: Stillman A. Symonds
    • Social Committee chair: Charles W. Page
    • Social Committee vice chair: Ian MacKenzie
    • Membership committee chair: H. Buck
    • Membership Committee vice chair: Atwood C. Page
    • Religious committee chair: E. Phyfe
    • Religious Committee vice chair: W. Harper
    • Social Service committee chair: M. Brewster
    • Social Service committee vice chair: B. Kingsbury
    • Missionary committee chair: C. Russ
    • Missionary committee vice chair: A. Deming
    • Music Committee: F. Laubin, chair
    • Music Committee vice chair: W. Allen
    • Publicity committee chair: G. Case
    • Publicity committee vice chair: E. Curtiss
    • Fellowship committee chair: N. Williams
    • Fellowship committee vice chair: D. Ellison
  6. Conklin turned the meeting over to Frank Whipple.
  7. Four speakers addressed the work of the Men’s Club and the church:
    • John Voorhees
    • Charles Welles Gross
    • Charles E. Thompson
    • Samuel O. Prentice
  8. Howard Walter gave an address on his experiences in India.

Howard Walter announced his resignation as assistant pastor on December 10, 1911.

The church would hold an informal reception for Walter on May 26, 1916.

  1. W. P. Conklin was the vice chair of the Men’s Club for this meeting.
  2. Fred D. Ellison was chair of the social committee for this meeting.
  3. The men’s club had 6 officers, 8 committees, and 16 committee officers. In all, that represented almost 30% of the people attending the meeting.
  4. Frank Whipple was chair of the missionary committee for this meeting.
  5. Samuel Prentice was chief justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court.
  6. Howard Walter was home on a furlough from India, and he expected to be in the United States for a year.
  7. Walter and his wife would reside in New Britain for the time being.
