Melvin H. Hapgood died at Noyes Beach in Westerly, RI, around 10:00 AM.

Hapgood was in Westerly because he had wanted to die there.

  1. Hapgood had been diagnosed with cancer several months before he died.
  2. In June, Hapgood had been taken to Noyes Beach at his own request.

  1. “Mr. Hapgood had suffered greatly with the disease but bore up with remarkable fortitude and was hopeful that a cure might be affected until recently.”
  2. “His case was for several months treated by the Christian Science method but lately had been in the hands of physicians. His case was doubtless hopeless from the first, although he attended to business more or less up to about June 1.”

Hapgood was survived by his wife, Mary Morgan Smith, and his four children:  Ruth, Dorothy, Alice, and Miles.  All of their children were younger than 10.

Unattributed.  “Melvin H. Hapgood,” Hartford Courant, July 5, 1899, page 5.
