First services at the new Trinity Episcopal Church

06/05/1898 |

Two services were held today at Trinity Episcopal Church.

  1. The morning service
  • F. D. Hoskins read the Litany
  • Francis Goodwin and Ernest Miel read the communion office
  • Storrs O. Seymour gave the sermon.
  1. The evening service was led by Francis Goodwin and Ernest Miel.

Information on this event comes from the May 16, 1910 article on Trinity Parish’s 50th anniversary, the January 6, 1912 article on the completion of the tower, and the November 22, 1959 article on Trinity Parish’s centennial.  All three of these articles put the date of the services as June 7, 1898, which was a Tuesday, although the article on the centennial describes June 7 as the date the church building was completed, not the date of the first Sunday services at the new church.  So far, I haven’t found any contemporary reporting on this event, but it seems likely that the service was on June 5, 1898, a Sunday that was also Trinity Sunday.

This was Trinity Sunday.

The new church building will be consecrated on May 31, 1899.

The new church building cost $159,000 to build.

The church building would have cost the equivalent of $5,856,008.31 to build in 2023.
