A ceremony was held today at 4:00 PM to lay the cornerstone of the new church building at Trinity Episcopal Church.

  1. A procession of visiting and participating clergy formed in the parish building
  2. William W. Niles led the ceremony.
  3. Jacob L. Greene placed the copper box into the cornerstone.
  4. The cornerstone was placed on the west front to the new building by the tower.
  5. An informal reception was held at 4:30 PM at the parish house.

The cornerstone was laid “according to the ritual of the Episcopal Church.”

The foundation for the new church building was underway by August 11, 1892.

  1. There is a discrepancy involving the date of this ceremony.  According to the May 16, 1910 article on Trinity Parish’s 50th anniversary and the January 6, 1912 article on the completion of the tower, the event took place on June 5, 1894.  A third article, the November 22, 1959 article on Trinity Parish’s centennial, puts the date of the event as June 3, 1894.  As always, I said with contemporaneous reporting over later articles that provide historical overviews.
  2. John Williams’s illness was noted at the time of the ceremony and in the May 16, 1910 and the November 22, 1959 articles.
  3. Jacob Greene’s role was noted in the May 16, 1910 article but was not reported in the contemporary articles.  I’ve included his role here because it doesn’t contradict the contemporary reporting that William W. Niles laid the cornerstone.

John Williams had been scheduled to lead the ceremony, but his health prevented his attendance.

  1. William W. Niles was the Episcopal bishop of New Hampshire.
  2. John Williams was the Episcopal bishop of Connecticut.
