Leo XIII told a group of American priests that he will soon appoint a new Bishop of Hartford.

The group of American priests included William Maher.

The priest had been granted an audience by Leo XIII.

  1. The Courant reported this information on September 11, 1893, but the article treated as unconfirmed: the Pope, the article stated, “is reported to have said that he would soon appoint Bishop McMahon’s successor.”
  2. Also, while William Maher was in attendance, the article does not state that he was the source of this information.

On August 29, 1893, the Courant reported that John Williams had received two lists of three candidates each for the next Bishop of Hartford and that Williams would soon submit those lists to Leo XIII.

William Maher was a priest in the Diocese of Hartford who had previously served as the diocesan chancellor.

Unattributed.  “Bishop of Hartford,” Hartford Courant, September 11, 1893, page 1.
