James Hughes returned to Hartford from Boston at 10:25 PM.

  1. Hughes had been to Boston to confer with John J. Williams about funeral arrangements for Lawrence McMahon.
  2. Williams appointed Hughes to administer the affairs of the diocese until a successor to Lawrence McMahon was named.

Hughes had been in New Haven when he learned of McMahon’s death and immediately left for Boston.

Lawrence McMahon died in Lakeville on August 21, 1893.

John J. Williams will be the celebrant at McMahon’s funeral on August 24, 1893.

  1. James Hughes was the Vicar General of the Diocese of Hartford.
  2. John J. Williams was the Archbishop of Boston.
