William Cone and John Garvie filed their inventory of John C. Mead’s estate in Probate Court.

Cone and Garvie appraised the total value of Mead’s estate at $112,977.90.

  1. Mead’s estate included two pieces of real estate, one being his business at the “old Methodist Church” and the other being a piece of land on Farmington Avenue near Laurel Street.
  2. Mead also owned 19 shares of stock in First National Bank.
  3. Mead had cash on deposit in three different banks in the total amount of $60,628.97.
  4. The remainder of Mead’s estate was personal property, which would have been appraised at $36,098.33.

The last of the three cash deposits is difficult to read, and I’m not certain I’ve guessed correctly on the digits in the hundreds and tens places.  This guess also affects the appraised value of the personal property, as that figure was determined through arithmetic.

Nowhere does the inventory mention a residence.

Mead’s estate would be worth $3,899,214.95 today.
