Dedication of the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows

Dedication ceremony held at the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows at 10:30 AM in Parkville.

  1. The ceremony began with a procession around the outside of the church.
  • Holy water was sprinkled on the walls.
  1. The procession then entered the church.
  2. Lawrence McMahon, surrounded by the clergy, knelt before the altar and chanted the Litany of the Saints.
  3. The procession circumambulated the interior as McMahon sprinkled the walls with holy water.
  4. The procession returned to the altar.
  5. McMahon “recited the rest of the impressive dedication service.”
  6. J. Shahan chanted the solemn high mass.
  7. Father O’Neil gave a sermon on the Virgin Mary.
  8. A collection for the building fund of the church was taken.

  1. Lawrence McMahon officiated at the ceremony. He was assisted by T. J. Shahan, who served as celebrant; C. J. McElroy, who served as deacon; and W. J. Shanley, who served as sub-deacon.
  2. A. F. Harty served as master of ceremonies.
  3. Music was overseen by J. Walz.

The Rev. Father O’Neil, O. P., gave the sermon.  The Rev. Father O’Neill, O. P. was in attendance.  These appear to be two separate individuals, because of their separate listing in the article, but the article did not give their first names.

“The bell, which is the only one attached to a Roman Catholic church in Hartford, will ring the Angelus three times each day – at 7 a.m., 12 at noon and at 6 p.m.”

  1. Lawrence McMahon was Bishop of Hartford.
  2. J. Walz was the organist at the Cathedral of Saint Joseph.
