Calvin Stowe died at about 2:00 am.

  1. The cause of death was Bright’s disease.
  2. He had suffered an illness that had lingered for many months, but he had been ill for about two years.
  3. He had been confined to his house prior to his death.

  1. The funeral was scheduled for tomorrow at 3:00 pm at 77 Forest Street.
  2. Burial was scheduled for August 25, 1886 in Andover, MA.

There will be a memorial service for Stowe at the Asylum Hill Congregational Church on November 28, 1886.

Calvin’s son, Charles E. Stowe, was pastor of the Windsor Avenue Congregational Church at this time.

“When Mr. Jewett, the Boston publisher, a few months after [Uncle Tom’s Cabin’s] publication in book form paid Professor Stowe $10,000, as the first instalment of profit on the sale, the professor said it was ‘more money than he had seen in all his life.’”

  1. Bright’s disease is the historic name for both acute and chronic nephritis and was frequently accompanied by hypertension and heart disease.
  2. $10,000 in 1886 is equivalent to $305,855.32 in 2022.
