The fifth trial of William Allen for the murder of Wells Shipman began today with jury selection.
The article refers to Eugene H. Miller of Hartland in its list of jurors who were excused and then to Ebenezer H. Miller of Hartford as the juror who knew nothing about the murder. Likely he was Ebenezer Hoadley Miller, born 1825 and died 1906 in Hartland.
William Allen was charged with murdering Wells Shipman on the night of August 31, 1877.
“There are no points which have not already been covered in former trials, and the public is so familiar with the general features of the testimony that The Courant will not inflict upon its readers repetitions of the old, old story, further than to note the progress of the case from day to day.”
Wells Shipman was a watchman at the state prison.
Unattributed. “William Allen,” Hartford Daily Courant, March 30, 1880, page 2.
