The Courant reported today that Thomas Galberry had appointed a committee to prepare matters for a diocesan synod that was planned for early September.

  1. Galberry appointed four people to the committee:
  • Hugh Carmody
  • Florimond DeBruycker
  • A. Murphy, New Haven
  • Michael Tierney, Hartford
  • Thomas Walsh, Meriden
  1. The committee could accept suggestions for items to consider at the synod for the next two weeks.

The article doesn’t state when Galberry made the appointments, when the appointments were announced, or what the purpose of the synod was, other than that it was a “diocesan synod.”

During the evening on June 22, 1878, a 40-hour devotional service ended at the cathedral.

This morning, there was a pontifical high mass celebrated at the Cathedral of Saint Joseph.

  1. Hugh Carmody, a priest in New Haven, had accompanied Francis McFarland to Virginia as McFarland attempted to regain his health in 1874.
  2. Florimond DeBruycker was a priest in Williamantic.
  3. P. A. Murphy was a priest in New Haven.
  4. Michael Tierney was the rector at Saint Peter’s Catholic Church in Hartford. He is the future Bishop of Hartford.
  5. Thomas Walsh, a priest in Meriden, was the vicar general of the diocese.
