The Diocese of Hartford held a requiem high mass for Pius IX at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church.

James Hughes offered some remarks about Pius IX at the end of the mass:

  • Hughes had interviewed Pius IX in Rome in 1864.
  • Pius IX sent Hughes 1,000 francs to assist in the re-construction of Saint Patrick’s after it burned in 1875.

The article reported that the Pontifical requiem mass would be held at “the cathedral,” which as of February 10, 1878 referred to the Cathedral of Saint Joseph.

Pius IX died on February 7, 1878.

The Pontifical requiem mass will be held on February 16, 1878 at the Cathedral of Saint Joseph.

Thomas Galberry circulated at letter to the churches of the diocese instructing them to hold requiem masses for Pius IX on or before February 18, 1878.  The letter also instructed the churches to substitute the “Pro Papa” prayer with “Pro eligendo summo Pontifice” until a new pope was elected.

In 1875, 1,000 francs was roughly equivalent to $220.85, which would be $6,177.19.  This all should be taken with a huge grain of salt, because it requires a couple of leaps over gaps in my historical knowledge, but:  France occupied the Papal States until 1870, when Italy defeated the Pope’s forces to reunite the territory with the rest of Italy.  It’s possible that 5 years later, the Vatican still used francs instead of liras, but honestly, beats me!
