Fire at the Old Warburton Mansion

Category:

Fire in a building occupied by G. F. Palmer as a stable and by John C. Mead as a joiner shop, behind the old Warburton mansion on Asylum Street.

  1. The fire possibly began in the harness room of the stable.
  2. There was a stove and a lot of old oily rags here: “possibly it originated in spontaneous combustion, as it seemed to be chiefly in a corner where the rags were kept.”
  3. An alarm was given early in the evening from the box at the house of Steamer No. 4 on Ann Street.
  4. In the stable, the fire destroyed at least one, possibly two harnesses, and at least one wagon was damaged.
  5. In the joiner shop, water damaged some stock.
  6. William McClunie suffered serious burns on his hands as he helped to get a carriage out of the stable sheds.

  1. Damage to the building was estimated at $30-$100. This loss was fully covered by insurance in Ralph Gillette’s agency.
  2. Neither Palmer nor Mead had any insurance.

“The damage was comparatively slight, which is fortunate, as the locality is one where a fire under strong headway would involve a serious risk.”
