In the evening, Francis McFarland’s body was placed in its casket.

  1. McFarland was dressed in the “full robes of a bishop, with sandals and mitre.”
  2. The casket, which was “elegant and costly,” had been brought from Brooklyn, NY.

There were a large number of priests already in Hartford for the funeral, and “every train brings others”.

It is unclear where McFarland’s body was at this point, but it was not yet at the pro-cathedral at the Mount Saint Joseph Convent.

Francis McFarland died on October 12, 1874.

  1. Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church had been “elaborately draped in black and purple.” H. Burr oversaw this effort.
  2. Saint Peter’s Temperance Society met this evening to discuss their plans for participating in the funeral. The meeting adjourned until tomorrow, in order to “perfect the necessary arrangements”.
  3. All of the various societies associated with Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church were held this evening. All voted to attend the funeral as a single body.

Tomorrow, McFarland’s body will be moved first to the pro-cathedral and then to Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church, where it was to lie in state.
