Plimpton Manufacturing Company began producing stamped envelopes

Plimpton Manufacturing Company began work on the government contract for stamped envelopes.

Currently, the company would produce envelopes with smaller denominations.

The company expected to expand its capacity to produce envelopes rapidly, in order that there would be no delay in filling orders for stamped envelopes.

  1. On October 10, 1874, the Courant reported that the company would commence production on October 11.
  2. On October 11, 1874, the post office department anticipated that it would exhaust its supply of stamped envelopes before Plimpton Manufacturing was fully operational.

The board of directors voted to increase the company’s capital stock by 25%.

  1. The Courant will later report that printing will actually begin on October 15, 1874.
  2. The Courant will report on October 24, 1874, that the Post Office Department had entered into a contract with George H. Reay to supply stamped envelopes on an emergency basis.
