The Courant reported that the Plimpton Manufacturing Company had leased extra space and secured extra equipment as they ramped up to start production on stamped envelopes.

  1. The company had leased three floors in the Batterson Building.
  2. The company was bringing equipment from the Morgan Envelope Company in Springfield, MA.
  3. The company anticipated that the contract would bring 150 jobs to Hartford.

  1. The Morgan Envelope Company would share in the contract in exchange for the use of their machinery.
  2. This arrangement was “considered advisable by the Plimpton company, as the expense of building new machines would be considerable, and would be attended with delay which might be embarrassing.”

On September 25, 1874, the Courant reported that the Springfield Republican had reported that the Morgan Envelope Company would have a half interest in the contract for stamped envelopes.

The post office department will receive the executed contract on October 3, 1874.

The article reported that the jobs would go to “one hundred and fifty hands,” as in factory hands.

The Batterson Building was on the corner of Asylum and High streets.
