Francis McFarland reported to have stomach cancer

The Hartford Times reported that Francis McFarland had a “cancerous affection of the stomach”.

The Times additionally reported that McFarland’s “recent visit to the south did not improve his health so much as was anticipated.”

  1. The Times article was reported in the Courant.
  2. His obituary would give his illness as chronic diarrhea, and the cause of death was an ulcerated intestine.

McFarland was back in Hartford on June 25, 1874, after his trip to Virginia Springs.

On September 10, 1874, McFarland’s condition will be reported as having taken a turn for the worse.
