Ground was broken on a new residence for Francis McFarland.

The new residence was on Farmington Avenue, and it would be the rectory.

The Courant described the future rectory as “adjoining” the pro-cathedral, which was in the convent.  Eventually, the cathedral will be built between the convent and the rectory.

The cornerstone was laid at the Convent of Saint Joseph on May 18, 1873.

  1. Francis McFarland resided at Collins and Woodland Streets at this point, and he would not live to occupy this new home.
  2. The rectory was typically referred to as the “Episcopal residence” during this period of time.

Unattributed.  “Hartford and vicinity,” Hartford Daily Courant, May 12, 1874, page 2.
