The Courant reported that Francis McFarland had gone to Florida for his health.
In McFarland’s absence, James Hughes would act on his behalf.
McFarland’s obituary refers to a trip to Aiken, SC, not to Florida. Certainly he could have gone to both, but so far I’ve only found reports of two trips he took in 1874 for his health.
On June 2, 1874, Francis McFarland would be in “Virginia Springs” for his health.
James Hughes was the vicar general of the Diocese of Hartford, effectively “second in command” after McFarland.
