James Dixon died at his home on Farmington Avenue just after 1:00 PM.

The cause of death was heart disease.

On March 23, 1873, Dixon was in such great pain that he was sedated with chloroform, and he remained unconscious until his death.

  1. “During the last two years he has been in feeble health and has spent most of his time in his own home on Farmington avenue. He has been much depressed in spirits, by reason of his failing health and his severe domestic afflictions.  Dixon was an accomplished and beautiful woman, to whom he was deeply devoted, and her sufferings and death greatly affected him.”
  2. “He was a man of large fortune, his landed estate alone in this city being of great value.”

James Dixon’s wife was Elizabeth Lord Cogswell, and she died in 1871.
