The Asylum Hill Congregational Society bought a lot on the corner of Sumner Street and Asylum Avenue from Francis J. Huntington.

Today’s date is the date on the original deed.

Both Atwood Collins and Melva Swartz described the property purchase as having “188 feet” on Asylum Avenue.  Collins then added that “later twenty feet were sold on the east,” while Swartz reported that “later 20 feet were added on the east side.”

The Asylum Hill Congregational Society formally approved the site purchased on June 29, 1864.

The Courant would report on the opening on Huntington Street and additional details on the purchase of the church site on July 7, 1864.

Collins:  “The grantor, Mr. Huntington, had built and then occupied the house on Prospect avenue and Sycamore road, now owned by T. Belknap Beach.”
