John Williams consecrated Trinity Episcopal Church.

  1. The event began with a procession from Elisha Johnson’s house at 42 Farmington Avenue.
  2. Edward Goodman read the request to consecrate.
  3. Pelham Williams read the letter of consecration.
  4. Frederic D. Huntington delivered the sermon, “The Trinity.”

The event was well-attended.

In the absence of any articles that reported on the completion of the church building, this is as close as I’ve found.

  1. By every account I’ve found in articles published either on or before May 28, 1861, the consecration of Trinity Episcopal Church took place on May 28 – however, the Courant’s article reporting on this event was published on May 30, 1861, and it described the event as having taken place “yesterday,” i.e., May 29.
  2. The institution of Pelham Williams as rector was scheduled to take place on May 29, unless the article from May 30, 1861, is correct, in which case it took place on May 30. I have so far found no reporting on that event after May 30, 1861.
  3. The sermon was delivered by “Prof. Huntington,” and I’m fairly certain that’s Frederic D. Huntington.

The installatino of the organ was underway on April 20, 1861.

John Williams spent Sunday, May 26, 1861, in Hartford.

Pelham Williams will be installed as rector tomorrow.

“The Consecration of Trinity Church, Hartford, will take place, God willing, on Tuesday, May 28th at 10½ o’clock, A.M.”

  1. John Williams was the bishop coadjutor of Connecticut.
  2. Edward Goodman was junior warden at Trinity Episcopal Church.
  3. Frederic D. Huntington had been ordained an Episcopalian priest on March 19, 1861. Prior to that, he’d been the Plummer Professor of Christian Morals at Harvard University.
