The exhibition of the Hartford County Horticultural Society opened today at City Hall.

Entered 63 varieties of greenhouse plants, 18 varieties of fuchsias, and three types of roses.

Other exhibitors included Gideon Welles, who would be Secretary of the Navy under Abraham Lincoln and James G. Batterson, founder of Travelers Insurance Company.

  1. “The walls were trimmed in evergreens [and] the gaily colored leaves found in the fields at this s[eas]on of the year; these partially relieve the dullness [of] the disgraceful old room and make it pleasant [an]d more in keeping with the riches on the tables.
  2. The [e]xhibition is a wonder of a success. In quantity an[d] quality, the articles exhibited here are far head [of] those shown at the National show in Philadelphi[a,] it is said.
