Some of what is forgotten about the reservoir

Construction mid-19th c. on part of the campus of the American School for the Deaf. Became a popular recreation area for area residents. Made obsolete by the Nepaug Reservoir. Bought by the Hartford Fire Insurance Company in October 1919, following Hartford Fire’s purchase of the campus of the American School for the Deaf in July 1919. Purchase of reservoir allowed Hartford Fire to move proposed site for its new building 20 feet farther back from Asylum Avenue, thereby preserving mature trees. Purchase also allowed Hartford Fire to give portion of land to City of Hartford, thereby altering the planned course of Cogswell Street.
