During the fire, Asylum Hill Congregational Church, Immanuel Congregational Church, and Trinity Episcopal Church all offered their facilities for use by Asylum Avenue Baptist Church in order that Asylum Avenue Baptist could hold its Sunday services on the day of the fire. Frank Haggard, the pastor at Asylum Avenue Baptist Church, declined these offers and cancelled services for that day instead. Asylum Avenue Baptist Church’s neighbors also made longer-term offers for the use of their facilities, for as long as “the burned church is unfit for occupancy,” as W. D. Mackenzie, acting pastor at Asylum Hill Congregational Church, apparently put it. |
