The insurance settlement

Text
The church had an insurance policy in the amount of $90,000, which had been taken out “some time ago,” according to members of the church’s general committee. The policy was held by two insurance companies, the New Hampshire Fire Insurance Company and the City of New York Insurance Company.

Additional detail: subsequent reporting on the church fire indicated that the church also held a separate policy for the fixtures.

Estimated loss: on the day of the fire the Courant cited a figure of $125,000 as the amount of the loss. A member of the general committee gave a figure of $300,000 for the amount of loss of the building as well as what was in it.

A subsequent evaluation of the church, likely conducted for or on behalf of the insurance companies, determined that much of the building could be salvaged.

The insurance settlement on the building would come to $56,771, which included $4,000 for the furniture and $7,000 for the organ. The other policy paid $4,000 for fixtures.

Additional details: reporting on the amount of the final settlement varied but stayed consistently close to $56,771.

The firm that negotiated with the insurance companies on behalf of the church, the R. G Bent Company, would receive the contract to rebuild the church.
