Damages to the church

The only accounting of the damage comes from the day of the fire, as published in the Courant the next day. The center portion of the church sustained the heaviest damage, both inside and out, and the interior was considered ruined due to damage caused by the fire, smoke, and water.

Damage to the exterior: the support beams of the spire were weakened, although the spire remained standing; the roof was penetrated by the fire, creating a large hole, but remained intact at both ends of the building; and the exterior walls remained standing.

Additional details: the City Building Inspector declared the spire unsafe and ordered it to be taken down.

Damage to the interior: the organ was destroyed, both by the fire and by its collapse into the basement; the pulpit and the platform were both charred by the fire; a grand piano in the junior department was destroyed; the ceiling collapsed onto the pews, exposing burnt support beams; and there was 1.5’ of water in the basement.

Additional details: some basement rooms remained intact.
