| The fire caused substantial damage to the church building, but the damage was not as serious as initially thought. The center portion of the church sustained the greatest damage, but a subsequent assessment of the building determined that much of the building could be saved. Additional details: On the day of the fire, witnesses considered the church to be a complete loss, and the next day, the Courant headline declared that the “fire completely destroys” the church.
