The fire caused substantial damage to the church building, but the damage was not as serious as initially thought. The center portion of the church sustained the greatest damage, but a subsequent assessment of the building determined that much of the building could be saved. Additional details: On the day of the fire, witnesses considered the church to be a complete loss, and the next day, the Courant headline declared that the “fire completely destroys” the church. The church apparently held two insurance policies, one for the building and one for the fixtures. Initially, it was not believed that the insurance would cover the full cost to rebuild the church, but ultimately it was anticipated that the settlement would cover most of that cost. |
