According to George Keller, he had heard from James L. Howard that Jonathan Niles would contribute $10,000 toward the construction of the Asylum Avenue Baptist Church if the new church’s design followed a church Niles had noticed often on 42nd Street in New York City, the Holy Trinity Church.

It was demolished in 1873 and replaced by a new structure designed by Leopold Eidlitz. The new building was then demolished in 1893.

The exterior walls, primarily if not solely. These were deemed salvageable in the appraisal following the 1931 fire, and plans for the re-constructed church preserved them.

I’m not exactly sure. They may have merged – First Baptist appears to have become part of Central Baptist, which is located on Main Street between Elm Street and Linden Place, but that may not have been a merger with Second Baptist. I'm afraid this one is a bit beyond my bailiwick, so I'm not likely to research this any further. If you know, though, please contact me and I'll include the information here!
