The height of the steeple

September 26, 1864

The Courant reported that the “tower and spire” would be 185’ high. This figure was based on the reporter’s access to Keely’s plan for the church.

April 3, 1865

The Courant reported that the spire would be 200’ high as part of an article on the ongoing construction of the church.

February 11, 1875

The Courant reported that the new steeple would add 120’ atop the bell tower, which was 105’ high, for a total height of 225’.

August 24, 1875

As construction of the steeple was winding down, the Courant reported that the steeple was “220 feet from the curb to the top of the spire.”

August 25, 1875

As an interesting side note to this issue, the Courant reported on August 25, 1875 that the “men who went to the top of the spire reached a higher level than anybody in Hartford ever was at before except in a balloon.”

July 14, 1897

The Courant reported that the spire was 230’ high.

October 5, 1985

The Courant reported that a “226-foot steeple was added in 1875.”
