Cost of the steeple

February 11, 1875

The Hartford Daily Courant reported on Roland Mather’s gift toward the construction of the steeple, and it quoted Mather’s letter to the Asylum Hill Congregational Society in its entirety: “You may rely on me to furnish the funds for the purpose to the amount of nineteen thousand dollars ($19,000) as a gift to the society.”

March 1, 1908

F. Irvin Davis told the Asylum Hill Congregational Church Men’s Club that “the stone spire, costing $20,000, was given by Roland Mather.”

February 14, 1915

The Courant reported the cost of the steeple as $20,000, which “was given by Roland Mather.”

March 23, 1915

Atwood Collins speaking on the fiftieth anniversary of the church, said that the church “was erected without its steeple, which was given in 1875 by Roland Mather, at a cost of $19,000.”

March 18, 1940

The Courant published an article on the upcoming seventy-fifth anniversary of the church that reported that “the slender spire, costing $20,000, was given by Roland Mather.”
